What to know about the Italian Grand Prix

This is the fifth oldest national motor racing Grand Prix (after the French Grand Prix, USA Grand Prix, Spanish Grand Prix and Russian Grand Prix), having been held since 1921.

Every Formula One Italian Grand Prix in the World Championship era has been held at Monza except in 1980 when it was held at Imola and the event is due to take place at the Monza Circuit until at least 2025.

Most recent race

The Dutch Grand Prix which was the 15th round of the 2024 Formula One World Championship was won by Lando Norris of McLaren on 25 August.

Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen finished second while Charles Leclerc of Ferrari secured a third-place finish at the Circuit Zandvoort.

Standings

Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen is still placed at the top of the World Drivers' Championship standings as he looks to defend his Formula One title.

Norris and Leclerc are placed second and third respectively in the standings as they hope to catch and leapfrog Verstappen with nine races left.

Favourites

Verstappen will be determined to defend his Italian Grand Prix title, but he will be up against Leclerc and Norris once again.

The joint-most successful driver in the Italian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton, will be competing this weekend with the Mercedes superstar having won this race five times.

Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher also won five Italian Grand Prix titles between 1996 and 2006.

Quotes

“I started on the soft tyre, I think it was a very good tyre, it felt much better than my medium tyre,” Hamilton said after finishing eighth at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix and he is placed sixth on the World Drivers' Championship standings.

“The hard tyre was pretty decent. “It was really difficult to see what I needed to do, whether to push. I was on a two-stop, so trying to use up the tyre, but I also wasn't sure whether or not we might possibly go for one [stop].

“Probably, if I'd done one stop and managed to manage a little bit better, I probably could have finished one spot ahead.”
